I. It takes 2 hours to cover the distance between A and B downstream.
II. It takes 4 hours to cover the distance between A and B upstream.

Answers.

1.(c)
Let the number of males be x. Then, number of females = (5000 - x)
10% of x + 15% of (5000 - x)= 5600 - 5000
10x/100 + 15/100(5000 - x) = 600
10x+ 75000 - 15x = 60000
5x = 15000
x = 3000

2.(d)
Ratio of initial investments = 7/2 : 4/3 : 6/5 = 105 : 40 : 36
Let the investments be 105x, 40x and 36x
A : B : C = (105x x 4 + 150/100 x 105x x 8): (40x x 12) : (36x x 12)
= 1680x : 480x : 432x = 35 : 10 : 9
Hence B's share = 21600 x 10/54 = 4000

3.(d)
S.I = 15500 - 12500 = 3000
Rate = (100 x 3000)/(12500 x 4) = 6%

4.(b)
Distance = 1100 x 11/5 = 2420 feet

5.(b)
Work Done by X in 4 days = 4/20 = 1/5
Remaining work = (1 - 1/5) = 4/5
(X + Y)'s 1 day's work = (1/20 + 1/12) = 2/15
Now, 2/15 work is done by X and Y in 1 day
So, 4/5 work will be done by X and Y in (15/2 x 4/5)= 6 days
Hence total time taken = (6 + 4) = 10 days

6.(e)
I gives, Machine X produces x/5 candles in 1 min.
II gives, Machine X and Y produce x/2 candles in 1 min.
From I and II Y produces (x/2 - x/5) = 3x/10 candles in 1 min.
Hence time taken by Y to produce x candles = 10/3 min.
Thus, I and II both are necessary to get the answer.

7.(a)
B's 1 day work = 1/20
(A+B)'s 1 day work = 1/7
(A+B)'s 5 days work = 5/7
Remaining work = 1 - 5/7 = 2/7
2/7 work was carried by A.

II is irrelevant.

8.(e)
Let the rate be R% p.a
I gives, P = 8000 and T = 4 years
II gives, S.I = Rs(8800 - 8000) = Rs 800
R = (100 x 800)/(8000 x 4) = 2.5% p.a
Thus, I and II both are necessary to get the answer.

9.(d)
We know that, R = (100 x S.I)/(P X T)
Now, I gives, SI = Rs 4000
II gives, T = 4 years
But, P is unknown. So we cannot find R.
So, given data is insufficient to get R.

10.(d)
Let AB = x km
I. Speed downstream = x/2 km/hr.
II. Speed upstream = x/4 km/hr
Speed of boat in still water = 1/2(x/2 + x/4)km/hr
Thus, I and II both even do not give answer.
