English Vocabulary | SBI | IBPS | SSC

In the present competitive environment English plays a very important role in our day to day life. Thus, it is necessary to have a good knowledge and understanding of English vocabulary for upcoming Bank Exams.


1. Beseech - verb - ask (someone) urgently and fervently to do something - प्रार्थना करना

Ex : "they beseeched him to stay"

Synonyms: implore, beg, entreat, importune, plead with, appeal to, exhort, call on, supplicate.

Antonyms: answer, command,refuse, reply, give, offer

2. Beauty - noun - a combination of qualities - सुंदरता

Ex : "I was struck by her beauty"

Synonyms: allure, artistry, charm, delicacy, elegance, good looks, grace, refinement, style

Antonyms: crudeness, inelegance, roughness, disadvantage, dog, homeliness, offensiveness, ugliness

3. Bable - noun - the sound of people talking quickly and in a way that is difficult or impossible to understand - प्रलाप

Ex : "a babble of protest" Or "psychobabble"

Synonyms: drivel, gibberish, jargon, blubbering, burble, chatter, clamor, gab.

Antnoyms: sense, silence, quiet, wisdom

4. Bandit - noun - a robber or outlaw belonging to a gang and typically operating in an isolated or lawless area - डाकू

 Ex : "the bandit produced a weapon and demanded money"

 Synonyms : robber, raider, mugger; brigand, freebooter, outlaw, desperado, hijacker, plunderer, pillager, looter, marauder, gangster

Antonyms: law, police

5. Bashful - adjective - reluctant to draw attention to oneself; shy - संकोची

Ex : "everything you need to know but have been too bashful to ask"

Synonyms: shy, reserved, diffident, retiring, self-conscious, coy, demure, reticent, reluctant, shrinking, timid, timorous, meek.

Antonyms:
aggressive, bold, forward, confident, unabashed, unshy


6. Bemoan - verb - express discontent or sorrow over (something) - पश्चाताप करते हैं

Ex : "it was no use bemoaning her lot"

Synonyms: lament, bewail, deplore, complain about, express regret about; mourn, grieve over, express sorrow about.

Antonyms: be happy, praise, gloat

7. Booty - noun - valuable stolen goods, especially those seized in war - लूट 

Ex : "the militias supply themselves with booty from the raided civilian populations"

Synonyms: loot, plunder, pillage, haul, prize, trophy; spoils, stolen goods, gains, ill-gotten gains, profits, pickings

Antonyms: trash

8. Burnish - verb- polish (something, especially metal) by rubbing - पालिश

Ex : "highly burnished armour"
        "marks can be removed by scraping and burnishing the metal"


Synonyms: polish (up), shine, brighten, rub up/down, buff (up), smooth, glaze; archaic furbish

Antonyms: dull, tarnish

9. Circumstances - noun - a fact or condition connected with or relevant to an event or action - हालात, परिस्थिति 

Ex : "we wanted to marry but circumstances didn't permit"

Synonyms:
situation, conditions, set of conditions, state of affairs, things, position; events, turn of events, incidents, occurrences, happenings, episodes, factors


Antonyms: plan, whole

10. Compensatory - adjective - (of a payment) intended to recompense someone who has experienced loss, suffering, or injury - प्रतिपूरक

Ex : "$50 million in compensatory damages"

Synonyms: offsetting, redeeming, remunerative, countervailing

Antonyms: chastening, correctional, corrective, disciplinary, penal, punitive
