English Vocabulary | SBI, IBPS Exam

In the present competitive environment English plays a very vital role in our day to day life. Thus, it is necessary to have a good knowledge and understanding of English vocabulary.

1. Adaptation - noun - action or process of adapting or being adapted- अनुकूलन

Ex : "the adaptation of teaching strategy to meet students' needs"


Synonyms: alteration, modification, redesign, remodeling, revamping, reworking, reconstruction.


Antonyms: neglect, refuse, reject, disagree, disarrange, dislocate, disorder, disturb, unfit.


2. Apt - adjective - appropriate or suitable in the circumstances - उपयुक्त


Ex : "an apt description of her nature"


Synonyms: suitable, fitting, appropriate, befitting, relevant, germane, applicable, apposite


Antonyms: improper, inappropriate, incorrect, irrelevant, unfitting, unseemly, unsuitable, disinclined.


3. Adjust - verb - alter or move (something) slightly in order to achieve the desired fit, appearance, or result - समायोजित करें


Ex : "he smoothed his hair and adjusted his tie"


Synonyms: modify, alter, regulate, tune, fine-tune, calibrate, balance, adapt, arrange, rearrange.


Antonyms:  disarrange, disorganize, disturb, confuse, disagree, disorder, disperse.


4. Accelerate - verb - begin to move more quickly - गति बढ़ाना


Ex : "the car accelerated toward her"


Synonyms: advance, expedite, further, hasten, open up, quicken, spur, hurry.


Antonyms: block, cease, check, delay, discourage, halt, hinder, slow.


5. Accuse - verb - charge (someone) with an offense or crime - दोष लगाना


Ex : "he was accused of murdering his wife's lover"


Synonyms: charge with, indict for, arraign for, summons for, cite for, prefer charges against for.


Antonyms:  applaud, approve, commend, defend, exculpate, exonerate, free, let go.


6. Abnormal - adjective - deviating from what is normal or usual, typically in a way that is undesirable or worrying - असामान्य


Ex : "the illness is recognizable from the patient's abnormal behavior"


Synonyms: unusual, uncommon, atypical, untypical, nontypical, unrepresentative, rare, isolated.


Antonyms: common, conforming, conventional, expected, familiar, normal.


7. Apathetic - adjective - showing or feeling no interest, enthusiasm, or concern - उदासीन


Ex : "apathetic slackers who don't vote"


Synonyms: uninterested, indifferent, unconcerned, unmoved, uninvolved, disinterested, unemotional.


Antonyms: caring, compassionate, concerned, feeling, interested, sympathetic, responsive.


8. Abandon - verb - give up completely (a course of action, a practice, or a way of thinking) - छोड़ देना


Ex : "he had clearly abandoned all pretense of trying to succeed"


Synonyms: renounce, relinquish, dispense with, disclaim, forgo, disown, disavow, discard. 


Antonyms:  restraint, self-restraint.


9. Abash - verb - cause to feel embarrassed -
लज्जित करना

Ex : "she was not abashed at being caught"



Synonyms: disconcerted, ashamed 


Antonyms:  Soothe.


10. Abhor - verb - regard with disgust and hatred - घृणा करना


Ex : "professional tax preparers abhor a flat tax because it would dry up their business"


Synonyms: despise, dete, hate, loathe, scorn, abominate, be allergic to, be down on, be grossed out by, have no use for.


Antonyms: admire, cherish, like, love, adore, approve, desire, enjoy, relish.
