WORD POWER - 4

As you know word power is the key to score high in English section and it's also essential to understand while you reading any passage or newspaper. So here we are posting some important words which you may have seen in daily newspapers with suitable examples and synonyms for your practice. Happy reading.

1. Wane – To become gradually weaker 
Ex – While his interest in these sports began to wane, a passion for rugby developed.
Synonym – Decrease, Diminish, Decline

2. Tepid – Something which lacks enthusiasm
Ex – The applause was tepid.
Synonym – Apathetic, Half hearted, Lukewarm

3. Benign – Kind, Gentle, Harmless
Ex – They are normally a more benign audience.
Synonym – Warm, Congenial, Amiable

4. Incendiary – Large fire attacks
Ex – Five incendiary devices were found in her house.
Synonym – Combustible, Flammable, Explosive

5. Accrue – Gradual increase in amount of money or interest over a period of time
Ex – If you don’t pay within 28 days, interest will accrue.
Synonym – Accumulate, Collect, Gather

6. Encompass – To completely surround or cover
Ex – The map shows the rest of the Western region, encompassing 9 states.
Synonym – Enclose, Ring, Encircle

7. Frisk – To search
Ex –The policeman pushed him up against the wall and frisked him.
Synonym – Check, Inspect, Examine

8. Avert – To prevent something to happen
Ex – Talks with the teachers’ union over the weekend have averted the strike.
Synonym – Stop, Avoid, Forestall 

9. Perturb – To worry
Ex – He was perturbed for his result.
Synonym – Anxious, Unsettled, Upset

10. Incredulous – Someone who is unable to believe something because it is very surprising or shocking
Ex – Her voice was incredulous.
Synonym – Doubtful, Dubious, Disbelieving
