WORD POWER - 1

           If someone wants to improve his/her English then word power is most essential. Here we are providing some important words with meaning, one example and synonyms for better understanding. Happy reading.


1. Hound(Verb) – Constantly disturbing or speak in an annoying or upsetting way
Ex - Newcomers are constantly hounding them for advice.
Synonym - Harass, Pester, Bother, Trouble

2. Persecute (Verb)– To treat cruelly and unfairly (Because of their beliefs)
Ex - His family has been persecuted by the authorities for their beliefs.
Synonym - Harass, Prague, Bait

3. Strenuous (Adj) – An activity or action which involves a lot of energy or effort
Ex - Avoid strenuous exercise in the evening.
Synonym - Difficult, Hard, Tough

4. Foist (Verb) – Dislike the way someone forces you to listen or experience something
Ex - I don’t see my role as foisting my beliefs on them.

5. Lax (Adj) – Not careful or strict about maintaining high standards

6. Anomalous (Adj) – Different from what is usual or expected
Ex - For years this anomalous behavior has baffled scientists.
Synonym - Abnormal, Atypical, Aberrant, Exceptional 

7. Baffle (Verb) – Something which is not understandable or explainable 
Ex - An apple tree producing square fruit is baffling experts.
Synonym - Perplex, Puzzle, Bewilder 

8. Infallible(Adj) – A person or thing which are never wrong
Ex - Although he was experienced he was not infallible.
Synonym - Sure, Trustworthy, Reliable 

9. Benevolent(Adj) – Kind and fair
Ex - The Company has proved to be a most benevolent employer.
Synonym - Considerate, Sympathetic, Humanitarian, Humane

10. Dismay(Verb) – Strong feeling of fear, worry or sadness
Ex - Local councilors have reacted with dismay and indignation.
Synonym - Appall, Horrify, Shock
